Colin Shumate - New Head Strength & conditioning Coach

Crean Lutheran High School is excited to announce the hiring of Mr. Colin Shumate, who will serve as the new head strength and conditioning coach. He is transitioning to Irvine from the San Diego area, where he attends The Rock Church. Coach Shumate grew up in Las Vegas and attended Las Vegas High School, where he was an exceptional high school athlete and recognized as a member of the Nevada All-Decade team by Rivals. Mr. Shumate transitioned from high school to San Diego State University, where he played football and later served as a member of the strength and conditioning staff. Coach Shumate has worked with STACK, both as a performance director as well as a program coordinator for the Southern California Region. He has developed professional athletes associated with a number of professional athletic organizations, including the NFL, NHL MLB, MLS, AVP Beach Volleyball, and has also worked with U.S. National Team Olympians. Mr. Shumate has worked with countless collegiate and high school athletes and teams from over 30 universities as well as high schools across Southern California.

Mr. Colin Shumate has a BS in physical education and health science, an MS in human health and performance, CSCS certification, and USAW certification. In transitioning to the Saints family, he stated, "Being part of the Crean Lutheran Family provides me the opportunity to go to work every day doing something I love, something I have desired to do since I began working in the field of strength and conditioning 10 years ago. My wife and I feel extremely blessed and honored to join a community pursuing excellence in academics and athletics, all in the name of Jesus. Our goal will be to develop student-athletes that glorify God through commitment, honor, and resilience (James 1:2-4). This reality is achieved through precise programming and professional coaching delivered to student-athletes, thereby improving imbalances, lowering the risk of injuries, and optimizing performance."

Goals:

  1. Develop student athletes that glorify God through commitment, honor and resilience.
  2. Develop athletes to take on the demands of their sport, and minimize the risk of injury.
  3. Develop a competitive and mentally challenging environment for our athletes to train.

 

Philosophy and Programming

We will develop athletes that are powerful, yet resilient according to the demands of their sport. Our athletes will be capable of achieving optimal performance at specific, critical times during the competitive season.

For the majority of team sports the optimal time is according to season (post-season, championships), however performance must also be achievable on a weekly basis for all athletes. The goal of off-season training is to greatly improve performance qualities. The goal of in-season training is to maintain, or continue to improve the qualities required in sport.

We strive to have the knowledge and understanding of stressors in life as well as in performance, to assist in managing the stress placed on every athlete. We want our athletes to develop the ability to recognize and understand the stress their body experience so they can be effectively responsive to improving their own performance.
